Transportation from Santiago to Puerto Plata

  • I am flying into Santiago and visiting Blackbeard's for a short time later this month. I see that buses run regularly between Santiago and Puerto Plata, but is one bus line better than the other (Caribe Tours, Javilla Tours)? I also thought about a taxi, but the bus fare is so inexpensive maybe it is not worth it for traveling solo in a taxi. I wonder though how much Miguel for example would charge for a taxi ride from Santiago to BB's?

  • The published taxi rate from STI to Puerto Plata (assuming the web page is accurate) is 3100 pesos or about US$65.

It's tough to pin Miguel down on a price (his famous words are "give me what you think") so the one time I had him pick me up in STI I gave him US$75 and he seemed to be ok with that.  My gut is that he's more interested in your local transport around town and possibly taking you to the tourist places where he (all taxis) get "finders fees".

The bus is a very economical alternative, but unless you hit it just right, you're going to have some idle time.  In Santiago I believe both of the Greyhound style operators are near each other - Metro and Caribe Tours.  There is also a mini-bus type option (Javilla) that I believe runs a little more frequently.  Unfortunately I don't know much about how that operates or what it costs.

Bear in mind that the last run by Metro or Caribe Tours from STI to POP is around 8 or 9pm.

Thanks Jethro! I only knew of the rate on the BB's website ($90). $65 or $75 isn't terrible, but I am thinking now to forgo the convenience of the taxi and save some pesos by taking the bus.

  • I've done it a few times before but a taxi is just more convenient as prices start to add up. You will have to take a taxi from the airport to the bus station which will be between 600-800 pesos and another taxi once you get to puerto plata and that ranges based on your negotiation skills anywhere between 200-800 pesos. Bus is only about 150 pesos. After the flight I usually want to get to my destination as quickly as possible but it always good to try something new. Metro bus runs every 4 hours and Caribe every hour do that is probably your best bet.

  • I wound up taking Caribe Tours from a station in Santiago to Puerto Plata. It was cheap and I was surprised at both the strength of the AC (actually the AC was too much - was in a seat under the AC vent in the very back) and the convenience of the WiFi. The waiting time though was an annoyance - I thought I arrived 20 minutes before the scheduled departure but wound up waiting for 45 minutes.
For the return trip, I was too busy with Kaira all day and missed the last bus (8:00 pm I think). She called a taxi driver friend and he drove us back to Santiago late in the evening for $65. A drawback was that he knew nothing about Santiago and we had to call the manager of the apartment I was staying in several times to get directions, as well as stop and ask other taxi drivers.
