Thought I'd mention,. cabbies do not get a kick back at Pica Flor. Youwho quizzed him about it & when we met the owner or manager, they both denied it. But I'm sure Miguel gets kick backs or free food at other places. Yes, I will not eat at Pauls new place outside the gates.  Chickens over head and dogs running around and only room for 5 people, no thanks!  Probably no running water, etc.

Yes Ralphie. The new Haitians were running Catamaran when I got incredibly sick. (That day’s fresh catch I was told).  There was a man there one day but he was pretty clueless and spoke little English
thanks john, that is what i was hearing you say, that the haitians were there then and your dates told me that but wanted to make sure you were talking the catamarn on the beach, not out the front gate, the haitians did the cooking , not paul.

that said, with pauls current situation, not sure how safe his food is.  i am not inclined to dine there.

when we went to the cat on the beach, we all opted to not eat there.  there was no discussion, we all just opted not to after looking around a bit

we spent the first five rather unremarkable days of our trip at blackbeards.  i say unremarkable, we really didnt do anything out of the ordinary.  as a matter of fact, i only left costambar to go to big lees for lunch one day and dinner the last night to amber cove.  a bit more on that in a bit. other than that, pretty well stayed right in costambar and was content doing so.  i think some of the other guys may have ran out for one thing or another, go to the atm, seems like there was another run possibly.

as for myself, i was just in need of some basic R and R, kick back and do nothing and was happy doing it.

the part about amber cove, we originally were going to go to puerto plata down by the ball field to a russian/ukranian restaurant, la stelva or something like that.  the night before when miguel was out to blackbeards to see what we had planned for the next day,  i showed him the ad that was in the costambar monthly advertising it.  he said he had never heard of it and didnt know where it was so he grabbed the ad and got the street, etc... where it was located

the following evening when we leave to go to the restaurant i was stuffed in the back seat with a couple of chicas (and was very happy back there. lol)  and it seemed like we were going the wrong direction and were driving too far.  i look out and see that we are on the highway.  wtf??  we are on the way to amber cove.   i am confused.

there was two vehicles, miguels van with 7 of us and kozak's clown car with three of them following.  that was a bit of a trick but worked ok .  we roll in to a seafood restaurant.  wtf???   welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll, when miguel comes to pick us up miguel suddenly was an expert on la stelva and said the food was no good, there were people hanging around outside, blah blah blah and he convinced jimjames to go to the seafood restauarant and he knew that was jimjames favorite food .

the 10 of us go in to that restaurant and they are instantly overloaded.  four people would have made them busy but we rolled in along with a dominican family all at the same time.

the waiter comes to our table and puts on a dog and pony show like they are a 7 course fancy restaurant.  gives us menus with no pricing.  wtf?? roger???  squak  "over" .   we should have bailed right then and there.  i was ticked.  the russians dont pay the cab driver squat, while a restaurant right at the dock of the cruise ship certainly does.

the food was ok, but pricing was , imho, high and the food was just ok, nothing special.  i had shrimp in garlic sauce, with sweet potato slices kind of toasted and a soda and it ran me just shy of 18 bucks for the same meal i got at the beach (the shrimp was bigger and more plentiful at the beach) for 395 pesos, 8 bucks and a buck for a soda.

jimjames apologized after when he realized what went down as he too wanted to try the russian restaurant as did kozak who speaks ukranian.  we got taken for a ride.  just bs.

i paid for that cab ride and gave mig what he would have gotten going down past the malecon.  he didnt say a word.  i was ticked and he knew it.

just a word to the wise, cab drivers get kickbacks at a lot of places, cristols, the strip club, fod, restaurants , etc...  it is public knowledge that if a fare pulls a girl at fod, the cabbie gets 20 bucks , the same as the cabbie at picaflor though mig denied that.  i wouldnt expect mig to honestly tell us the cabbies dirty secrets, so him denying that means nothing to me
