Before the 2017 hurricanes, one of my favorite things about BB was a quiet little place at the far west end of the beach for lunch - El Catamaran.  I returned in January 2018 to find the owner, Paul (a German guy) and his crew gone, about 1/3 the seating, and a new owner.  Obviously my lunch spot had changed and not for the better.

Day 1 I had lunch, no problem, although menu and service was subpar.  But Day 2 ... I had fresh, fried fish (as usual), but this time, about three hours later, I got sick.  VERY sick.  Fever, chills, diarrhea, exhaustion ... big time.  There's NO question it was the fish.  I tried to get an earlier flight home, no luck - I was stuck for two more days - and I had to move (as planned) to Sosua.  I didn't go out ... just sweated it out until my scheduled flight.

I got home Jan 13 at 10 pm.  Next day, 11 am, I was in the US emergency room.  Long story short, it took 10 days and numerous tests  to get stabilized.  My kidneys went haywire for a few days.  Blood pressure plummeted.  I was a mess.

I'd like to thank BB's Nico, Valaria, and the bar staff for their sweet efforts to help.  I suppose I could have gone to a Puerto Plata clinic, but I was unsure about that.   In retrospect I should have at least tried.

Word to the wise: DO NOT EAT AT EL CATAMARAN ON COSTAMBAR BEACH.

What is the insurance situation down there for business owners?

Any chance of recovery if the Dominican authorities simply come in and take the property?

Could Pica Flor ownership be interested in expanding to Costambar?

I am just back from a five week trip to Costambar.  The scuttlebutt is that the potential sale is going nowhere.  The prices being offered are not nearly what John thinks it is worth.

The problem with that is that John is in poor health and when he dies, if he still owns it, the executor handling the estate may just sell the place to the highest bidder who may get rid of the whole concept of a "Hotel with chicas".
i forget what john was asking, 1. something million.  anyways, a business that could be going balls to the walls one day and the next be closed is going to have a hard time demanding the kind of money john is trying to get.

the authorities can come in tomorrow and close them down, just that simple.  look at some of the bars in sosua.  that is exactly what happened.  they were going gangbusters and then closed the following weekend.

i often wondered what happened with the blackbeards connection with blancos

john always had a soft spot in his heart for blancos and encouraged all of us to consider it as well.

i know it has probably been a couple years back when we had the parties i was going to work on getting all of the guys to bring different stuff, along with cash for those that didnt want to drag stuff down and when i went and chatted tim up he said to just bring cash.  leave the other stuff home, cash was what was needed.

dont know why, that just did not resonate well with me.  it just didnt feel right hearing that after reading john's various pleas for help be it cash, pencils , markers or tablets or clothing and shoes.

i am not sure why john has become so silent

posting an email from Claudia Docker since I have not seen any updates on their website in years:

Hope that you are keeping well.

As you know last year when you were here, my husband was in and out of the hospital and I  told the people in Canada that I could not spend so much time looking after the foundation.  They found someone else to do it, and I looked after the company and the accountant did the books for here.

Conani the government arm that looks after orphanages found us after 12 years.  They wanted us to get another property to put the girls, which would entail hiring more staff.  They believe that having girls and boys on the same site would be like adding gasoline to a fire and the girls would get pregnant.

In August we closed Blanco's Kids.  The children are now back in Amistad with different people, some in the Capital with distant relatives.  With the help of some of my friends we have been able to get some food and clothing for them. They are in school, and some have part time work.  In total 3 of the children have received commendations from the government for getting high marks at the government exams.  I do not think that they would have had that opportunity if it had not been for the help that they received through Blanco's Kids and the kindness of different people here and abroad.

We had our annual Christmas party for them last Sunday, and Blanco brings them occasionally to Costambar to visit.   One of the little girls, 7 years old, I had a friends without a child and she took her in as a guardian, she is now in private school, taking ballet and enjoying her new home  where she will have so many wonderful opportunities.

Yes, help is still needed, with food, notebooks for school, clothing.

I look forward to seeing you in January.

Here's their website Antonreef.Com. It's right on the corner after city lights so JerseyItalian is right. Noise shouldn't be an issue. I haven't taken a look at the rooms but have heard from the guys that helped build it that the rooms were kinda small for a hotel in Sosua. They were looking to rent out rooms last time I was there in October but it was still empty.
