Title: Dominican army deployed in the streets of Santo Domingo to combat insecurity
Post by: suikakuju on June 19, 2013, 02:07:20 PM
1,400 soldiers have been deployed alongside the police in the Dominican capital since the middle of June on orders from President Danilo Medina in an attempt to combat rising crime in the city. Over the last 20 years, the homicide rate in the city has practically doubled, reaching 25 murders in every 100,000 inhabitants, while the population’s confidence in the security forces has sharply deteriorated, amid accusations of corruption and complacency.

In a message to its citizens at the beginning of June, the US Embassy had warned of frequent aggressions targeting motorists at several intersections in the capital (John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln; John F. Kennedy and Maximo Gomez; John F. Kennedy and Ortega y Gasset; Ortega y Gasset and San MartĂn; Ortega y Gasset and Paraguay (Plaza de la Salud) and 27 de Febrero and  Churchill)
