  • all said you cant go wrong with the new garden. very centrally locatated, all mongers staying there,  priced in the middle, nice  basic accomodations, breakfast is included in your room cost and you will find  a large gathering of other mongers there that can give guidance, wingman info, things to do, not do, etc...

on the cheaper side of things, there is rockys, just up the street a bit, lots of ex pats hang out there and rick the owner is there as well and has a pulse of things happening in the su.  rockys accomodations are a tad bit more sparse than the new garden though and have heard complaints that the motos running by all hours of the night and the fumes (a/c is extra) were bothersome.

on the more upscale side, terre linde is located in the same area as rockys and the new garden, carries a bit higher price tag

  • First off welcome to the site fishbone glad to see u posting. Ask as many questions as u need to.  Being a newbie there is a lot to learn.

Ralphie1 was right on what he said and I will add to that.  If u want a little more off the beaten track and a really nice place for cheap send me a pm I will let u know about it.

If u want to jump right into the swing of things then sosua is ur place for action.  If ur more laid back and want a nice relaxing vacation without the worries of haggling and all the bullshit the sosua girls give u then blackbeards is where u need to be

      agreed on the blackbeards comment.

blackbeards is a good place to cut your teeth in the dominican republic.   sosua tends to be pretty harsh on a DR rookie.  bb's is good for a warm up to sosua.  go there, (bb's) unwind some, talk to the others on about the su, make a day trip (night trip, whatever) and check the place out and/or go to bb's, get your feet under you then go to the su for a night or two

  • I would have to recommend Rockys for your rookie trip. Out of 10 trips, I have stayed 8 of them with Rick (Rocky).

There are a couple reasons. Rick's customer service can not be touched in Sosua. He goes out of his way to make sure every guest is happy and taken care of. Rocky's has 3 different options.

    1) The rooms behind the restaurant. They are basic, clean rooms at an affordable price. I believe they are $30 a night, $35 with A/C.

    2) Tradewinds. They are one bedroom condos just outside of town. I wouldn't recommend them for your rookie trip, but something to keep in mind for future trips.

    3) My now prefered place to stay. Sosua Suites. Rick does not own them, but he managage's them. They are one bedroom condo's directly across the street from Rocky's. They are recently remodeled and right near the action of Pedro.

    You can reach Rick at

  • i had always thought that rockys rooms were a bit on the sparse side of things and just never went there.  perhaps i am wrong.   correct me on that if you would trey

what i expect out of a room, reasonably clean, hot water on demand, king bed with a decent mattress,  wi-fi in the room,  , safe, prefer digital, not keyed, a/c and a fan,  tv with a t least a few channels  in english, safe walking distance to PC.

i think rockys meets most of these, the one thing that has kept me from staying there though was a bud that stayed there and said the sound of the moto's was enough to drive him crazy (he didnt have a/c in his room so assume he had the window open

have heard good things about sosua suites.   just wish there was a bit more info on them.  ie.  how many units there are there, that kind of stuff.  on their site, it is actually kind of confusing where it is

  • I am on the fence with this one.  I stayed there once and i wasnt too impressed.  I tend to like more style then anything but i know when i first started some 3 years ago i was told i should check out bb as a newbie then go venture out and i took that advice and i was happy i did.  Now i go to sosua a lot becuase i am experienced but if i went straight there i would have been nervous as hell lol.

I too have had a lot of those issues with the girls there and you just have to be more careful that is all

Just thought i would throw in my opinion for what its worth

  • As far as the rooms go, I'll never tell you they are plush rooms. They are basic rooms. Queen bed. TV with satelite. Digital safes. Hot water (sometimes you have to wait a few minutes for it to get to you), and wi-fi in every room.

I just checked the website, and the rooms are $25 a night. Or $30 with a/c. There was a time that I told Rick I wanted air. But when I was checking out, I told Rick I never used it. He immediately took $5 off a night.

Rick bought the place in Jan 2009. That was when I met him. On my rookie monger trip. He has slowly been upgrading everything since then. At this point, every room has a/c. He's currently working on replacing the matresses (a huge plus as far as I'm concerned!). He wants to put small fridge's in, but the generator won't handle it. Things take time in the DR.

As far as the noise goes, what can I say. The only place that your gonna get peace and quiet in every room is Terra Linda. They have a huge place. But we're talking the difference between $25/$30 a night, and $80 a night. Your going to get a rooster on one side (room #1), or you'll get the dishwashers from Orchidee outside of room #4. Benny lives in room #3 so that's out. #2 and #4 are the one's left for quiet. But again, for a room for $30 a night that is less than a minute walk to the middle of the action, something's gotta give. Imagine paying ng's rates, and that fucking rat dog barking and waking you up at 8am. Or you try and take a nap and guys are drunk and partying with chica's right outside your room.

  • NG was cool, when Wilifred was managing the place. He gave good customer service. Along with the fact that he would introduce people. Imagine finding out, after you get back from your trip, that other board members were eating at the table across from you, but no one knew who was in town, and you never met them!

  • I can't tell you how many guys I met last year in 6 trips. But, I can tell everyone that I met three guys that I now consider brothers. I talk, either on the phone or IM, every week. That's a whole lot more than I talk to my family.

  • btw, this last trip, at the ng they had one of those big buffet things there.  wing and i came down and was waiting on the rookie and were sitting in the lounge chairs by the group of palms there between the pool and the hotel.   a rat was running in and out of that group of trees eating food on the ground.   kept getting braver and venturing out further each time and for longer.  good sized rat, gonna say it lived in that root base at the tree.  no way u could flush it out of there.  dogs were clueless

  • Sorry it's taken me so long to get back.

Rick is managing 7 units at Sosua Suites. They are located directly across from Rocky's. There is a sliding metal door, that's the entrance.

Hey Fishbone, my advise is to stay at NG or one of the close surrounding hotels. Then we you get there you'll see the layout and tons of other options for your following trip. I didn't realize how close stuff was until you see it personally. NG is a great place to get your feet wet, then see what you like and don't like about a place like that. There are really no too many bad choices just alot of personal preferences.
