Cracking down on prostitution in Sosua

The new Ministry of Tourism provincial director for Puerto Plata province, Lorenzo Sancassani says that every effort is being made to reduce the impact of prostitution in Sosua and the north coast. He said that the authorities' priority right now is to back businesses that promote legitimate travel offers. As reported in Hoy, he said that meetings have been held with the new police commander in the area and the new director of Politur for plans to take action to tackle the problem.

"The Ministry of Tourism and the Prosecutor General Office are coordinating actions aimed at controlling the problem and guaranteeing surroundings where we can restore domestic tourism and family tourism," said Sancassani. He said that plans were afoot to develop the Maritime Park project in Sosua beach, with a focus on diving in the Sosua Bay. He added that they would be working towards relocating vendors, and for introducing new signage for taxis to crack down on unauthorized 'pirate' taxis, as well as preventing chaos and crime.

  • Thanks for the post.  This is not good news and not the first time this type of thing has been reported.  It seems to come out every couple of years.  Of course, the new beach and what is being planned may change the dynamic.  We will have to wait and see.  If this goes through, I guess FOD, BB, and like venues may end up being the way to go.  Still, I hope things have not advanced before my upcoming trip starting on 12 May 2013. :)

Diving's pretty decent in Sosua Bay, I will shout out an AMEN! to that. Certainly it is good enough for me to pack my bubble-blowing gear. HOWEVER, it will never be 'great' diving, not as long as people are taking sport fishermen out to the diving sites, and certainly not until there's enough coral growth on the reef-ball projects to make them pretty.

The major attraction of Sosua as a dive destination - at least from my POV - is that I can spend the day blowing bubbles and spend the night getting blown by Bubbles, and Conchita and the rest of the chicas.

But ... no-o-o-ooo. Let's run out all those filthy hoors and the unspeakable evil johns that pay all the bills and keep Sosua on the map. We can put the girls to work at shit wages, doing housekeeping at the AIs, and build an expensive freaking underwater Dizzneyland, maybe like Ocean World over the other side of Puerto Plata.

(Oh yeah, speaking of AIs, how's the occupancy rate doing for Playa Dorada?)

  • Seemed like they are gearing towards the sosua area mainly and why? It’s the biggest tourist area next to cabarete…the tourist traffic there is by far 100x more than down in the middle of Puerto plata and if you want to count costambar as well.  Puerto Plata see’s a lot of action due to the Melacon, but I don’t see tourist living there much.  I know for a fact the last time I was in Sosua I said to myself wow, there are a lot of damn foreigners here, just doing typical normal shit you would do here in the states from food shopping to walking their dogs as if they are going to be there for a while.  I remember speaking to one of the hotel owners that I was staying at and she told me that some people come down and stay 3-6 months at a time and this is not counting who already lives there.  Now with that said fine they want to try to make it safe for who??? – because let’s face it half to most of those girls don’t bother anyone, sure if you look at them and make eye contact she thinks you are showing interest, but during the day Sosua is just a normal old town – and at night it’s no louder than Manhattan or Miami big deal it’s a party town – now I know they said they are gearing towards the places that covet it. CMP to be one and that is their goal, but the independent girls, what are you going to do ? tell her she can’t have a friend or she can’t talk to you.

If they ever really really crack down in Sosua that place will look like the tombs of death valley in weeks, no tourist will go there, so all those European owned food restaurants who get money from us because during the day we are there relaxing with our boys or last night’s date, feeding the economy of sosua, where the girls who make their money and go food shopping, get their hair down pay their cell phone bills, helping the economy – it’s funny how they want to so called crack down on sosua where if you go to the north coast tell me a town that is in pretty good shape economy wise?? Because let’s face it Sosua/Puerto Plata is nice and relaxing to get away from the grind of everyday living, but it’s not really your top destination spot for weekly vacations unless you’re in the hobby that we are in.

Let’s face it – IMHO and this is just me speaking, the new mayor is trying to flex his muscle and say we did this and we are doing that, Why? Because he wants more traffic there, he wants more people to come to Sosua and not Punta Cana (Oh wait there is prostitution there too?? Yes indeed) – but since PC is a very very expensive tourist place, I personally am not going there its more family oriented with your regular night life activity (I just had friends return from there talking about how they seen girls standing on the corner looking desperate).  So for him (the mayor) to come out and start saying this is because he wants more than us to go there, he wants families to go there, he wants husbands and wives to honeymoon there,  Yes in the long run he is trying to weed us out without weeding us out, if you get what I mean, if we outnumber the normal tourist 80%-20% I bet he wants those numbers shifted normal tourist 20%-80% mongers.

It will be one daunting task to try to eliminate it 100% and like I said if he ever succeeded that place will collapse within weeks. Let’s see how this goes

Even though I walk in the church and burst in a ball of flames
Only Hall of Fame I be inducted in is the I love whores of fame
    On the wall of shame...

  • This is why the mayor of DR is coming out saying all this shit. He is covering his ass. But lets face it. If he is half as smart as I think he is. He will call home boy from NJ and say.

Never come back these girls are the backbone of our economy. Find somewhere else to go because of your carelessness you see the shit I have to say or say I'm going to do.

Because while the DR mayor sounds like he is going to flex his muscle he will cripple 100s of businesses and thousands of jobs because we just won't go there. We will flood costs rica. Thailand and other places and I know he doesn't think that regular tourism is going to build that economy in sosua. Ill laugh to his face if he thinks that you can play a game of shuffle board in that run down city.

  • Of course a politician gets caught there and they raid cmp lol.  If I'm not mistaken Colombia after the secret service incident everything was big shit. Now it's forgotten and soon will this. Yes it's fresh now and if they didnt raid someone they will be deemed as to approving the act of prostitution. I'm no law maker by any means but I think in reality this will soon all blow over and just be one of those statements a politician makes

"Yes we are working very hard with our law enforcement to see to the efforts that prostititon is not going on in our city, we cannot stop everyone at once but we are working diligently and around the clock to make sure that our streets are clean from these types of activities".

The same shit we hear all the time the fucken broken record of politics.

  • Gentlemen, I wouldn't worried about it. If you read the article the police say they want to reduce the impact of prostitution, not wipe it off the map. The leadership in Sosua and surrounding attractions know what side their bread is buttered on and it is not with family tourism. I understand that they don't want Sosua to be raging den of iniquity, but mofo's have to eat and provide for their family. So gentlemen don't fret, still plan your trips, go drink your  presidentes, brugal, ron barcelo and mamajuana, and enjoy what the Dominican Republic has to offer.

  • Yes soooooo true they did this shit a few years back and made sosua close all their out doors areas and keep it all in doors and that never worked and they do this shit for publicity and since our stupid senators got busted over their recently they have to make a statement.

Funny thing i read today is the Hoes are Fighting back lmao

Here is the post i read from a newspaper

    Prostitutes reject penalization of soliciting

In an interview with El Dia today, Friday 10 May, sexual workers complained that the new measure announced by Prosecutor General Francisco Dominguez Brito that clients soliciting prostitutes would be arrested and their details put on file has scared away their clients. As reported in El Dia, prostitutes working in the Centro de los Heroes area of Santo Domingo said their clients are telling them they will have to meet somewhere else.

Dominguez Brito said that the government would intervene in prostitution centers and gathering areas that are located on George Washington (Malecon), Sarasota, Duarte, and Ortega y Gasset avenues in Santo Domingo and Calle Del Sol in Santiago.

  • Here was Rick Aka owner of Rockys in Sosua

Well, they are NOT making prostitution illegal here. They are stating that pimping is illegal as it always has been. They are confused over just what pimping is. Solicitation is not illegal so I am unsure how they are going to be arresting guys for partaking in a legal activity. I guess we will just have to wait and see. It was business as usual on the streets of Sosua last night.

By the way, did you find out Howard's handle? I would like to know what it is.

    Take care,

    Rick

  • The a article was stating enforcement was areas of Santo Domingo and Santiago.  No mention was made of Sosua.  There is a big deal happening with the cruise lines on the north coast.  It is possible some one is pressuring the powers to be to clean up the image of Sosua.  The promise of big tourist money in the future could be very tempting
