The Foreign Office is investigating reports that a British holidaymaker has drowned off a beach at a popular Dominican Republic resort.

Media reports from the Caribbean nation say the woman, who has been named locally but whose identity has not been confirmed, was knocked off her feet by a wave and swept away.

The 36-year-old was swimming at Playa Sosua at 4am with her boyfriend, believed to be a local, after a night out.

She became separated from him and her body was found on another part of the beach later by local civil defence volunteers.

The victim had been staying in an apartment at Calle Libre for a week prior to the accident and was due to fly home on Sunday.

Her body was taken to the Cabarete medical centre and will be transferred to the National Institute of Forensic Science as part of the investigation.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We are aware of reports of the death of a British national in the Dominican Republic and are looking into it."

The website sosua.com says the north coast of the Dominican Republic has been a top tourist destination for Europeans for nearly three decades and has a very large expat community.

It adds: "Sosua Bay attracts many water sports enthusiast, including snorkelers and divers because of its sheltered, calm waters, diverse species of fish and intricate reef structures."

Sosua Beach, which is a crescent-shaped bay protected by coral formations and clear waters, "is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic and among the top tourist destinations of the Caribbean".

  • The truth of the Sosua is simply this.  It aint Key West, FL... beaches rough filled with rocks and jagged edges that'll cut you up.  The tides are hard hitting and a non-swimmer can easily be overwhelmed by it.  And no lifeguard in sight. Sex for pay is the last thing the government has to worried about.  On top of that, I really dread seeing bicycle rental open up on PC.  The combination of gringos that haven't rode a bike for over 20 yrs and Dominican drivers is going to be nothing but an accident in the waiting.

  • Call me a cynic, or you can say I've learned to be Dominican, BUT.........a British woman, and her LOCAL boyfriend, 4am,..........do you really think it was a drowning accident?
Death is death, and I'm sorry for the woman and her family, but I doubt it was an accident.

  • I wouldn't want to speculate on what may have happened, but with the scenario ewe has described along with alcohol consumption then I'd say it could well have been a tragic accident.

Either way, a terrible way to end a holiday and a tragic loss for the woman's family.

  • I bet her purse was empty after she 'drowned', along with everything in her hotel room.

  • Alcohol and 4 AM are plenty enough to explain her tragic demise.

Sosua Bay is wide-open to the west, and any westerly winds are going to bring a lively and even dangerous fetch into the reefs - and the beach. I was knocked down and rolled around during my February visit, on Playa Alicia, and that was cold-sober at 11 AM ... not hard for me to understand that if I'd gone swimming with a snootful at zero-dark-thirty, my own cold corpse might have washed up on another beach in the Bay.

My condolences to her family, her friends back home, and her boyfriend in the Su.

  • I can't speculate on this isolated incident because I don't have any facts. But I will say that I have seen some UK and Canadian women looking for "Sanki Panky" and losing their judgement in Sosua.

4am swim? Maybe alcohol was involved. Nevertheless a tragic event to say the least.
