Sosua Trip Report - June 2017

  • ALL IS WELL!   What I saw, heard, and experienced on a Wednesday-Saturday stay:

    1. Saw more chicas on the street than I have in years at all hours.
    2. Saw more FINE chicas on Playa Sosua than I have in years.
    3. Saw plenty of dimes in Classicos starting at Midnight.  Downstairs bar ain't too bad starting at 10.
    4. Picaflor is a great new addition  NOT EVERYONE'S CUP OF TEA, but I pulled a sweetheart for overnight.
    5. Playa Sousa never looked better and every hut is occupied.
    6. Sorry to hear about the demise of Casa Cayene Hotel (Wilfred's Sosua Sunrise). Any inside info on the closing?
    7. City Lights (now Sosua Lights) plans a $900,000 US upgrade.  A) Is that enough? LOL! ... and B) I'll believe it when I see it.
    8. All El Batey streets have been repaved.  They don't tear up old asphalt, they just pour more on top.  So watch your step!
    9. Rt. 5 between Sosua and Puerto Plata has added several new stop lights and I saw numerous cops giving traffic tickets. Hey, it's a start!
    10. Fewer beggars, Viragra pushers, or offers for change than in recent visits.

All in all, good news!   I'll post a similar Blackbeard's checklist soon for my Sunday-Wednesday stay.

  • Thanks Big John, that's some really great news. We were debating trying Medellin next month but now you have us thinking.

  • My short, recent experience was not as positive.  I haven't been to Sosua for about 3 years, but visited there while at a resort with my daughter.  To explain it clearly, I had to buy some alcohol and some cotton to wipe myself down after returning to the resort.
It is a filthy place.  There is no peace.  If you are a foreigner, you will harassed non-stop by beggers, moto concho's, people selling things, money changers, and of course, low, and some very low quality chicas.  I went to Classico's, and of course there was talent at night.  I didn't have a room, so I was just gathering intel.  A decent morena asked for 2000 compensation.
I returned the next day during the day, and chicas were in the street.  I saw one nice chica, dressed in casual clothes, and she wanted 2500.  I grabbed a room at Rocky's, and a bunch of chicas, including the one who wanted 2500, were out front.  I had no interest.  The town is a turn-off.  No peace, and every M.F. trying to scam you for an extra 10-20 pesos, including the money exchange.  It wears you down after a while.  The taxi from Play Dorada also tries to scam you for a couple extra pesos.  Like I don't know what they're doing, so I pay the extra 20 or 30 cents.  But, sometimes you have to argue, and although I'm not Latin, my Spanish is o.k., and the culture respects haggling.  While at the resort, I went with the carriage/horse guy to some dump of a pueblo not far away.  I ordered a large Presidente, and when it was time to pay, he asked for 150 pesos.  I laughed and basically said, are you kidding me?  Again, arguing in another language does not have the same impact as your own language (to yourself I mean).  They tried to insist that was the price, and settled for 125 pesos, which was still high.  Anyway, while in Sosua, I went for a massage, which for 700 pesos, about 14 dollars, is a great price.  Massage girl was not hot.  At the end, she asked if I wanted additional service, and it was 1000 more pesos for a BJ.  She also offered sex which I wasn't interested in.  Anyway, I couldn't get to the beach, which I wanted to.  For me, I prefer not being harassed by everyone, and moving at my own pace, and making my own choices.  You simply can not walk outside of your hotel in peace.  Although Blackbeard's is further away and secluded, which is also a good thing, I don't see why someone would go to Sosua.  Why risk anything with these 'independents'?  At Blackbeard's, the prices are set, you have peace and tranquility, the girls are medically checked out, there are no scams, you have a wide variety of women, there is a beach, pool, restaurant, and small club.  I was only able to stay there one day, and I was very impressed.  I had been there over 10 years ago, but the ambiance was awesome.  More later.

  • Obviously you had no idea what Sosua is all about. And why the hell would you ever take a daughter there?  I stay at nice hotels in Sosua - but nice is Sosua would not be acceptable to most Americans. As the saying goes, YMMV.  I love Sosua - AND BB.

  • Martinmilo, Where did you stay in playa dorada? There are several nice clean, family oriented and couple oriented places! There are also dives! We love it there, with the exceptions of the taxis and of course the horse carriages. Several people on trip advisor have reported being robbed while using those horse carriages out of playa dorada over the past several years. We avoid them like the plague! You probably got lucky with just an overpriced, expensive beer. The only reason we are not spending time there this month is because of the downfall of FOD. We used to love the proximity.

As for Sosua, the craziness is what sosua is all about. It hasn't changed much in 3 years. Try Cabarete next time if you're with your daughter. That is much more family oriented and a 15 dollar cab ride to sosua. I have to agree with bigjohn, I wouldn't go there with my daughters  unless I was staying at the Gansevoort (which is big bucks).

Blackbeard's, I have to agree with you. I love the controlled atmosphere with set prices and not having to always have your guard up. You get to know everyone and you can relax, but it can get boring after a few of days (especially for a couple that has a more limited menu than a single guy)

We always end our tirps in sosua for at least a couple of days before we fly out.

  • Guy's, sorry.  I must not have been clear.  I would never rake my daughter to Sosua.  She stayed in Blue Bay in Playa Dorada while I checked out Sosua.
Again, no peace in Sosua.  A crapshoot with the Chicas.
I was also counting on going to FOD, but avoided it because of the bad reviews.

We loved Playa Dorada for the same reason. So convenient to FOD and a short ride to BB's. We stay next door to Blue bay in Casa Colonial, but it's not guest friendly.
