  • Just wanted to ask you fellow mongers about the food in Sosua, are there any american fast food chains like a papa johns, dominos, or a Mcdonalds around Sosua? I don't know if I would have the stomach to try Dominican food. can anybody tell me more about the food in the sosua? do they have American fast food?

  • All I know there is a dominoes in Puerto plata Sosua there are none of the above and hopefully never. If you think you can't try Dominican food. Would you honestly eat a hamburger from a McDonald's out there bro?  You better off experiencing the local dishes which are awesome. Start with simple chicken and salad or chicken and rice or potatoes stuff you would eat here, you don't have to get too crazy and try the mongul yet

  • There is a KFC and burger king but don't even think about trying it the way its cooked is totally different and isn't that good.  Local dishes are good just don't eat salad because they wash it with water and that could get u sick other then that local food is really good

Dominican food is really good, stick with the chicken or the seafood and you will be fine.

  • Hi Jimmy

I don't like FF in the USA, I don't believe it would improve any in Sousa.. I did find some good restaurants in Sousa last month.

Bailey had a good mix of expats and locals so I believe that's always a good sign.. the pricing varied but you could get a decent meal for 300 to 400 peso's..

I was staying at the Terra Linda and their restaurant the "Scotch N Sirlon" has very good steaks.. Maybe a little pricey. Then there is always Rocky's with their world famous ribs, they are very good at a fare price

Here is a link to Sousa Restaurant with a guide and review of all the food joints

  • John, if you are apprehensive about Dominican food don't be. If pizza is your thing you will find small restaurants on the main drag with wood fired brick ovens that make better pies than PJ or Dominoes ever will.

What they do really well is roasted chicken. A lot of the chicken is farm raised and they use Carribean spices such as Annato and Allspice to elevate flavors. Arroz con Pollo is my favorite down there. Dominicans cook everything for a long time with a lot of garlic and onions. Some of the best simple dishes I've had were from the DR. Never have I been ill.

Stay away from street carts and be careful on the beach as I've seen some dubious practices. I agree with CEO about raw ingredients as they are washed with tap water ... still I couldn't imagine not having mangoes every morning.

I go to the DR for the women, but the basic cuisine is excellent and something I always look forward too.
