  • I'm curious as to which test they will accept?  The PCR test can take days to get results (3-5 in South Florida).  Hopefully it will be the rapid test.

It says a "viral test" is required which I understand to be the swab of the back of the nose or throat (PCR).

  • This is not acceptable.

I have trip in mid-Feb. So I can't return home until I get a Dominican nurse to stick a rod down the back of my nose?

I am so sick and tired of these tyrannical motherfuckers. This is complete and utter bullshit. If such a test is available to tourists it's going to be expensive and/or limited with local Dominicans taking priority. I'm trying to stay calm. I'll need to get more information. Already booked for BB's and got the airfare.

I hate to say it but I'm starting to question if it's even worth the hassle. Curfews, PCR tests, masks, take-out only dining...I'll be a goddamn prisoner for my entire vacation.

  • When I'm at BB later this week, I'll try to get Martha or Nicco to find out where any available covid testing is available for us US guys. Luckily I return the day before this begins.

  • I was down their in October of last year. While I was their, I received a text from a friend informing me that the Gov. of NY
was making it mandatory for me to have  negative test results within 3 days of my return. I don't know what happened because
no one asked for it. they just had me  fill out a form upon arrival and the DOH contacted me 2 days later. For those who use
Miguel as driver, he will take you to the hospital where they will give you the test. I paid $70.00 US.

  • Testing required is viral Covid test of which there are 2 kinds.  One is the PCR and the other is the Antigen test, both viral tests. I imagine the rapid antigen test is more affordable.  The PCR test here in Dallas is as high as $250 to $450 for rapid results.

  • I read in another forum that the Bournigal Clinic does the PCR for RD$4400 or about US$75 at current exchange.  They are in town.

They have to send the sample of Santo Domingo so it takes a couple days.  There are some other places in Sosua.

  • Here are a couple of websites with Covid testing info.  One lab claims to have "test at home" service.  Blackbeards should arrange for them to go on site on request to handle the required testing.

This is from AirTransat as the Canadians have been requiring negative tests for about a week now:

PS.  Canada does not accept the antigen test

  • Hi All,

I am not surprised by this development, and expect to see similar implemented more and more around the world.

As countries begin to vaccinate more widely, I expect that the following will become the requirements. A number of countries in Asia and the Pacific region are already requiring this (Thailand is discussing it, Australia has announced that these steps will likely become required in June, 2021, etc.):

    1. PCR-RT tests (or maybe antigen tests) required prior to boarding your outbound flight. In the U.S., some airlines are already supporting these requirements with testing being set up right in the airport. I agree with HuskerDude (above) that this is still somewhat expensive. But the good news is that there are many clinics around who will perform this (I know that in Dallas that there are MULTIPLE clinics available for SAME DAY PCR-RT testing).

    2. Proof of Vaccination. I believe that this will become the "gold standard" for travel. No vaccine? No travel. Hey, don't shoot me, Fellow Mongers. I don't make the rules. I'm just saying that I predict that this will become the standard. But as more more countries vaccinate their citizens, and as the virus continues to spread out of control in many, many countries, then countries will require any immigrant (tourist, working person, etc.) to show proof that he/she is vaccinated. This will do two things: (a) reduce the risk that the person entering is infected or an asymptomatic carrier, and (b) reduce the risk that the incoming person will get infected and sick while in the country (and thus further burden their already overburdened healthcare systems).

    3. PCR-RT test (or antigen test) to "go home". And this may be one of the harder parts. Because us Mongers will have to depend on our hosts helping us find a local clinic/hospital/doctor who can conduct the testing and produce the required paperwork.

I am not saying that I agree with all of these. But, they likely all make at least some sense. And especially as countries spend billions and billions of dollars to reduce the extent of disease (e.g., vaccines) and burden their economies with lockdowns and other steps, then I expect them to implement many/all of these.

So, what do we do as Mongers if we want to travel?

Well, same as always: we comply.

For me, I intend to travel to DR once more before Asia opens (probably sometime in late February or early March). And as soon as Philippines re-opens (I am predicting in April or May), I will be on one of the first flights over there.

So I can either sit here and bitch and complain and "waller in misery". Or I can make sure that I can comply with all of the above so that I can travel.  And for me, I want to get on with my traveling again (have already been down to DR).

  • 100% Marsman, I have already been to the DR twice during Covid and don't plan to stop so long as I have a way to comply with the return requirements, and for that matter, any requirements that the host countries might implement.  In fact I'm headed down tomorrow.

Two things I would comment on your post.  For now, the CDC is saying that vaccination alone is not a substitute for testing.  Perhaps in the future that will be the gold standard.

I also heard a news report this morning and the thinking is that in countries where testing may be difficult, the airlines have a vested interested in providing the testing and will probably do so.  No testing=No passengers=No revenue.

  • Mabuhay/Hola/Sawasdee Fellow Mongers !!

I received an email yesterday from one of the private resorts (they have European girls, and some South American girls sometimes) at their resort. It is an expensive place to go. But interestingly, they have implemented a relationship with a local clinic in Punta Cana (the resort is in Punta Cana) to provide the required testing. Here is their email:

If you haven't already heard, the U.S. is now requiring a negative Covid-19 test for all air passengers before returning to the United States from a foreign country. This will begin on January 26th, 2021.

For all of our U.S. guests, we will arrange for you to get a rapid test for $100 at a facility near our villa to meet this requirement before your departure.

You can read more about this at the CDC website.

If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me.

So they have worked out a solution.

Punta Cana is smaller and more spread out that Puerto Plata. There must surely be similar capabilities in POP. My sense is that if resorts want to stay open and continue to have guests, they are going to have to help their guests find the required testing.

    Mabuahy/Hola/Sawasdee Sir Jethro Gibbs,

First, safe travels and enjoy !!

Second, I agree that, for now, the vaccine is not viewed as "the sole answer". But I believe that soon (maybe 2 or 3 months from now), more and more countries will open, and for those that do, they will require BOTH testing AND vaccination.

Like you say, we will do what we have to do, if we want to continue to travel.

i am afraid the vaccine thing will be pushed even further than to be able to board a flight.  you might find to be admitted to a hospital, go to a high capacity sporting event proof would need to be shown, anything with a lot of people or a large indoor gathering.  of course, the easiest way to track this will be to implant a chip

Viral test detects the Virus so you need PCR to reproduce the rna virus strain.  Rapid test is antigen test, antigen isn’t a virus now is it? It’s a structure of molecules outside a pathogen.  What requirements would ask for a 3 day old antigen test?  It’s instant almost hence ‘rapid test’. As for cost I’m referring to pcr tests outside of the usa in the banana republic countries we visit. Here in Colombia its about 400k pesos about 115 usd. Why would I be talking about how much it costs in the states its all free with insurance or free loader programs, and good luck getting that back in 3 days.  Colombians are just now getting the vaccine end of the month 100 usd a shot.

I’d be very weary of any places offering cheaper than normal tests, but if it gets you back to the states who gives a fuck right?

  • Mabuhay/Hola/Sawasdee Fellow Mongers,

A little additional information on the required testing starting on January 26:

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

According to this article, either the PCR-RT test (which is typically more expensive, and takes longer, but is likely to be more accurate) or the antigen rapid test (which is usually less expensive, quicker, but may have more false positives or false negatives) are acceptable for entry back into the U.S.

In talking with a friend who works in the airline industry in leadership, he said that American Airlines will require proof (either through their VeriFly app or through producing a hard copy of the report) at the time of check in to return to the U.S. (e.g., if you are checking in at Puerto Plata, the agent where you check in will review your documentation).

    Hope this helps !!

I’d be very weary of any places offering cheaper than normal tests, but if it gets you back to the states who gives a fuck right?
i am surprised that the test is that cheap in the DR.   consider, the only people that are going to be asking for that test typically would be the tourist, whom the whole country preys upon trying to pick their back pocket any chance they get.

as inept as so many things seem to be in the DR, i could see a lot of false positives, same as here in the states

  • USA knows these countries dont have real pcr testing labs. Rapid test is just a kit and realistically its good enough.  Most these kits given to 3rd world countries are free or donation from USA or UN. If they charge you 100 bucks for a rapid test they you are getting ripped off.  If someone offers you a PCR test for cheap and there isn’t a government subsidized program in place I’d be weary of the reliability of these tests.  Brazil pays half so a test their cost 50 bucks.

Oh and btw if a pcr test costs 150 bucks and rapid test is 100 bucks how many of you think the locals are actually getting these tests and their numbers are accurate? I call bs

  • I think I heard President Biden say today if you are entering the country from an international flight you have to have a negative COVID-19 test and quarantine. Not sure what this quarantine is all about but he mentioned that in his address today. Unfortunately, he was not very specific. If that is the case it adds a whole new wrinkle in travel mainly for travelers that have to go back to work.

Make travel safer. Biden mandated mask-wearing on public transportation—including planes, buses, and trains—and is requiring negative tests for international travelers and quarantines on arrival.

there were countries overseas that put you on lockdown for 14 days.  i forget all the particulars, a gal went to watch her BF in some sporting event when she was supposed to be on lockdown yet, they deported her. i would assume with that deportation order is a "and dont come back!!! " order as well.  not sure how they caught her, but they did
