An observation.  In DR this was an illness of the rich and the tourists.

Up to a week ago had 21 cases.  20 were tourists who brought it with them, primarily Americans, French and Italians.  There was one Dominican woman who was presumed to have caught it from one of the tourists.  However she was seen out shopping having been told to quarantine herself for 14 days.  Her name has never been published to my knowledge, but she must be recognizable to people on the street, therefore TV personality?  It turned out she had been on a vacation to Spain where she caught it.  Therefore rich.

A week ago 16 Dominicans were dropped off by a Costa Lines cruise.  DR was a regular port of call.  The ship is riddled with conavid-19.  DR took its own, but refused to allow the rest to land.  It is now looking for a place to drop off its infected passengers.  If you are Dominican and can afford to go on a cruise, you are relatively rich.

The final nail against the rich came on the week end of 14/15 March when a high society wedding was held at a resort in Punta Cana.  All the rich and famous of DR were there.  The government had already banned large gatherings but the organizers must have felt sufficiently close to the government to proceed.  A week later people attending the event started to fall ill.  Last Saturday 90 people were declared infected and the number is increasing every day.  The total number in DR is now over 600 including the Foreign Minister who was at the wedding.

    It is a total mess.

But of course all those rich people are now infecting their cooks, gardeners and cleaners.  They continue to drive around with entitlement.

The President is said to be "madder than hell" was not at the wedding.  Was he not invited or did he choose not to go?  The next day he introduced quite draconian measures to try to control the spread of the disease.  One of these aimed at the rich is the introduction of the curfew.  If you are out between the hours of 8 pm and 6 am you are consigned to jail for 48 hours.  If you are in a car, your car is impounded for 14 days.  To get it back you have to pay the towing fee, a storage charge and an administrative charge plus the usual 18% tax.

    Life in DR
i dont know if i would call it a sickness just of the rich.  the poor folks of the DR would be very very slow to seek medical attention due to the cost so they just are not being counted because they have not show up at a medical portal to be counted.

that all said, the DR being an island , the virus would be slow to hit there so those travelling (the rich and well to do or tourists) would probably have been responsible for bringing it ashore

  • The latest from DR today is that the curfew imposed on Monday from 8 pm t0 6 am, when no one is allowed out for what ever reason, has now been extended from 5 pm to 6 am.

In the first four days, Monday to Thursday almost 10,000 people were arrested.  If you are caught out walking you are fined and if you cannot pay you go to jail.  If you are driving you get fined and if you can't pay you go to jail AND your car is impounded for 14 days.  To get it back after 14 days you pay a towing fee, a storage fee, an administrative fee and the usual18% tax.

That is an incentive to stay home.

  • To follow up on Husker's important message. He of course is in the medical field. I am not but still wanted to pass along possible alternatives. Not all masks are equally effective. Attached are a few that are not compliant and may not give you the desired outcome.

  • This really sucks, was wanting to get plans in place for next trip, but the uncertainty just really isn't going away, just getting worse. Ontario is just starting to really restrict what were able to do anymore, can't even go to work anymore. It seems like.

i dont know how far out you are planning, or want to plan for, but just check your airlines change policy if you were to book now.

american airlines will allow a no fee , no penalty change up to the i think the end of january next year.

there are good deals to be had from the airlines at present.

I'm starting to think that even planning a September trip may be a risk. I really hoped this would all calm down in the summer but...I don't know...too many people not taking this thing seriously.

  • Yeah, I'm not surprised. It's unfortunate that they're not taking this more seriously. I hope that they know something that we don't because frankly this virus is really nasty even if you don't die from it. Statistically most aren't going to die but why put yourself at risk of infection by hanging out like they're doing? Especially, if getting over the virus just means that you can finally breathe somewhat normally. Survivors are reporting that they're fucked up for WEEKS long after it passes.

But hey what do I know? I'm not the YouTuber, Mr. T who thinks it's a "scamdemic" concocted by the Illuminati overlords who want world domination by having airliners crisscrossing the sky with toxic "chemtrails".

When the virus hits the north coast and the bodies start piling up perhaps Mr. T can comfort the grieving families by telling them their loved ones died as a sacrifice to the One World Order... ::)

  • There were lines at many of the supermarkets that day because there was a WhatsApp rumor that there would be a countrywide lockdown for 14 days. This wasn't true but word spreads and people believed it hence the long lines country wide.

  • As I understand it the curfew on place from 5 pm to 6 am the next  day has been extended to 24 hours for the Holy Week and the weekend.  Furthermore if you were caught out in your car the previous penalty was the car was impounded for 14 days.  Now the car is impounded indefinitely until the government lifts the pandemic restrictions.  Certainly weeks and possibly months

  • the latest newsletter from blackbeards, hot off the press:

    Ahoy Blackbeards Pirates...

I just wanted to bring you up to date on the state of affairs at Blackbeards. The hotel has been closed since March 18th, and all of our employees were sent home on March 19th. So .. walking around the hotel feels like you are in a ghost ship, because the only people there are the day and night security team. Fortunately we have not had any problems.

The COVID-19 has hit the island fairly hard - with 2,759 reported cases and 135 reported deaths. In light of these numbers the government has setup a daily curfew from 5:00 PM to 6:00 AM and was started on March 25th. I do believe that this was a good move as it has improved the numbers and has been aggressively enforced. The interesting part of enforcing this curfew is that if you are caught out during these hours you are taken to jail and put in a holding pen. At 6:00 AM you are given cleaning tools to clean the Malecon or main beach until 3:00 PM when your allowed to go home. Novel, but effective punishment.

The best news is that none of our employees or shipmates have contracted the virus yet, and hopefully will not. On the 15th of April the government will be giving registered employees a portion of their salaries ... but I have to make up the balance. Guess which side has to pay the most ... plus taxes, health insurance, social security, electricity, etc. I have decided to voluntarily give my 45 shipmates a small amount of cash for food, and I am donating whatever we have left in our freezers and refrigerators.

Unfortunately for all, I do not believe that the hotel will reopen before July - August. As soon as I know that it would be safe to reopen, I will let you know. In the meantime please don't waste your time emailing us about availability because we simply do not know at this time.

Finally ... as part of our extended Blackbeards family - please stay safe .. and wear a mask and gloves while in public (eye patch and sword optional). All of us at Blackbeards wish you, your family and friends the best of luck with this COVID-19 virus ... and we can't wait to welcome you back as soon as possible.

I live in New York City and we have control over virus....because we following social distancing, wear mask, and washing hands/ using hand sanitizer and don't touch face while you are out side...

A lot of countries are banning U.S citizen from their country, I don't blame them I would of do the same thing until U.S. control their infection rates....I am definitely not going to Brazil, They are not doing any thing to control Virus and that President just got the Virus....

I change my plan for NEXT YEAR JUNE 2021...I am not taking any chances of getting this Virus....

Not trying to pick a fight with you but have you considered the fact that for weeks the government demanded we take this seriously?

    We did.

We shut down our entire economy and stayed home. We "flattened the curve", washed our hands, closed schools, shops, and restaurants.

    Then...

Our medical establishment decided it was totally fine to HAVE A FUCKING  RIOT, TEAR UP THE STREETS, AND WRECK INNER CITIES!!!

    Then...

Demand we "bend the knee" to a bunch of Marxist unmasked assholes who didn't give a fuck about grandma coming down with Covid-19.

And for all of that we should do what exactly?

Sounds like a credibility problem...but hey...orange man is far worse I suppose ::)

  • covid is real, but it was blown waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of proportion and used politically.

they are blowing their bugle about the uptick in cases  all the while ignoring what should be the biggest concerns, ICU occupancy and deaths which are both on the decline.   they have manipulated the numbers for so long that the powers to be dont even know what the truth is and they dont have an honest baseline to go off of because what they have is a farce.

things can only be manipulated so far but at the end of the day with all of the riots and lack of social distancing  by the models those areas should be a hot mess , but they arent.  the ICU's are not overflowing, they are not out of vents and the morgues are not stacking bodies like cordwood.

guys, we have been played and are being manipulated and it will continue until after the elections.  then we can get back to normal, go out and enjoy a good steak dinner and travel again without worrying about our dick falling off.  (wait, that one was back during HIV scare  )

    Mabuhay/Hola/Sawasdee Sir Ralphie !!

I agree with you: this virus is very real. As a physician, our state medical board has continued to remind all physicians in our state of the urgent need for relief of the frontliners (those physician hospitalists/intensivists and pulmonologists who are working in ERs and ICUs), and providing relief for them. I have worked two 12-hour shifts back in May, and likely will sign up to cover at least one or two more in July or August.

As you note, it is unfortunate that the "politics" of this are involved, and that the news media breathlessly reports every little change in anything. I agree that testing rates provide meaningless data. The more we test, the more that we discover infections. It has been estimated that for every 1 test we run, there are 6-10 more people who are asymptomatically infected. So if we tested all 10 of them, then we would find many, many more cases. Surprise surprise, right?

What we should be following are:

Percent positive tests (because that give us information on how widespread the infection is, and how prevalent the asymptomatic cases are)

Hospitalization rates (increasing in many places, but still mostly manageable)

ICU bed usage (again, increasing in some places, but still mostly manageable)

Deaths from COVID-19 as a primary diagnosis

As you say, Sir Ralphie, this has become highly political. I did not vote for Hillary Clinton (one of the most dishonest, corrupt people, along with her husband, in politics) in 2016. Nor did I vote for Donald Trump (he just seemed to not possess the characteristics of what a President of the United States should have). But he is our President, and we all need to give him a chance to do the job that he was elected to do.

And in 2020, I cannot imagine voting for Joe "Hiden" Biden. I sincerely believe that he has a form of dementia. Seriously, an exam is urgently needed. Memory care is likely needed. And, again, cannot imagine voting for Trump, either.

So I consider myself to be apolitical, and choose candidates who I feel will best help our incredible nation succeed and prosper.

With that said, and with my INCREDIBLE CLAIRVOYANCE, I give you the November 4, 2020 headlines (the day after they eleciton). The NY TIMES and Washington Post headlines on November 4 will be one of these:

"Trump Re-Elected: Oh My God, The Humanity of It, Remaining 10% of People on Earth Will Die Within 24 Hours of Melting Seas Flooding All, or Corona Virus, or Global Nuclear Wars Triggered by Trump, Or ..."

"Biden Elected. The Sun Is Shining. The Birds Are Singing. Corona Virus??? We Don't Know Nuthin Bout No Stinkin Corona Virus"

    Am I right???
