  • well, the trip down to the DR this year started out differently than the norm, that being not taking the usual route.

with the grounding of the 737 maxjet and the superbowl being in miami, making connection through miami just did not work out this year.   the pricing along with making connections on the return were issues but not to worry, american has a hub in charlotte which did not dissappoint.

the trip down was a fast one.  the flight was supposed (if we did not need de-icing) to leave dtw at 6 am but we were quite a bit later than that getting out of there.   we were supposed to have an hour, 17 minute layover/connection time.  wasnt the case.

upon touching down in clt, there was time to hit the can then go scan the board to see what gate we needed to be at.  hmmmmm , we need to go to another terminal.  a short walk later we are at the gate.  we did not stand there for 5 minutes and they started loading.  a pretty efficient use of time but too close for comfort. lol

the boarding time allowed was 45  or 50 minutes, which seems like a lot but... you ever watch dominicans board a plane ?  lol   all said, boarding was complete and we pushed back ten minutes early.  everybody that was supposed to be there must have made it.

the flight was without incident and we were on the ground by 1:15pm .  that was pretty nice, getting there that early.   our bags arrived very promptly, little to no waiting and outside to find a smiling miguel waiting on us.

while waiting in line, our joe pescci from jersey (youwho) was already ahead of us in the immigration line but my wing and i slid out ahead of him and waited outside with mig for him.

a short trip later we are at jennys exchanging money and picking up water, juice and snacks.  checked in at bb's long before the contest

mig was able to turn and burn back to pop to pickup jimjames and the stud who came in at 3:30pm.

now , something we have been doing the past years is paying pesos when checking in.  if you have ever noticed, on check in they factor your room and taxes in dollars (expecting you to pay in dollars) but also list a sub par peso  rate,  a couple percent less than the going rate.

so, by paying the $496 u.s. in pesos, 25,771 rd was figured on 52 peso to the dollar (we exchanged at 53.1) , we saved 546 pesos  $10.28 u.s.).  not a big deal, but still, will buy you a nice lunch or dinner

on checkout , that peso rate is lower, being 50 pesos to the dollar.  evidently they figure we will all be out of pesos so by paying the checkout in pesos you save 3.1 pesos for every dollar you had on your drink/eats tab.  in my case,   $232 so i saved 719.2  pesos paying in pesos

add the 719 and the 546 pesos and i am half way to a short time appt. with a gal just by paying attention to the games bb's plays with the conversion ratios.

they have been doing that for years and years, as long as i can remember, the spread has just gotten larger in the last handful of years.  the spread on checkout is 6% where on checkin it is 2%, round numbers.   you have a bigger number checking in, a larger percentage checking out.

i am not out to try to cheapy cheap through a trip but i figure that 1265 pesos fits better in my pocket than it does bb's with them using the exchange rate as another profit center.

consider, 22 rooms x 25 bucks u.s. per week times 52 weeks a year.  that is $550 a week or $28,600 a year just playing the the peso rate.  now that all said, that is an average room cost, probably less than average restaurant tab and full occupancy which we all know does not happen all the time.

still, nice lil profit center there and something to keep in mind.

all i did was ask thursday evening for my balance so i knew how many pesos i needed to have on hand and all was good.  i always try to balance out my pesos so i never take home more than $100 worth u.s., give or take, as the peso has consistently devalued itself 5-6 percent a year against the dollar so taking too many pesos home is counter productive as that $100 becomes $94 worth a year later.

those of you that make multiple trips a year, not that big of a deal.

  • blackbeards expanded their menu, somewhat, keeping most everything that was on there.

they added a page of mexican fare , which kind of fits into the domincan cuisine as well.    i had the chicken fajitas and thought they were very good and filling as well.   a good value for the money.

my favorite is the wings with garlic honey drizzled over them.  the only downside is honey all over your fingers.  they now also have chicken chunks that i get the same garlic honey on the side to dip the pieces in.  not quite the same but still very good and you dont have to handle your food with your fingers.

i still shy away from anything beef down there as the hamburgers are always a tad off flavor wise, which carries over in spaghetti sauces and the likes.   the filet mignon has a gravy over it helping to make it more palatable but you can still pick up on the fact it is dominican beef.

the smoked pork chop is another favorite and is good every time i get it.

the evening meal was ate out of the compound  most evenings walking over to las roca 3 or 4 times and to sole mio once.  both are excellent choices and pricing is very good for the quality .

las roca is a really nice quiet place to go and eat with only ever one table ever occupied in the times i have went in there.  subdued lighting,  a bit classier , but simple, decor with piano bar music playing.  service is very prompt with items fresh cooked for you after you order.  their menu has a variety of food that should suit about anybody , but not a huge menu.   the helpings are such that i never walked away hungry, usually the opposite, walked away feeling stuffed.  the best for last, pricing is what i would call cheap for what you get.

the filet that they serve at las rocas is actually a couple bucks cheaper than that served at blackbeards , the difference being the beef is palatable at las rocas and does not need a gravy over it to hide behind.

the chef/owner is german and has a very good snitzel. i had that several times and really enjoyed it.

sole mio has great authentic italian food, now second generation.  the current owners grandmother started sole mio and i think i had heard that she was from italy and did not speak english.  the only downside there is dont go in hungry or you will end up mad waiting on your dinner.  they are slow.  they have the same amount of help working if they are busy or if they are slammed, the difference being it could take a couple hours on a busy night.

blackbeards food , as always, is good, and fair priced but they did make a new menu up with the new items on it and of course they made new pricing to go along with that.  you can eat about anywhere in costambar now , all about the same price so you wont be saving money by eating in at bb's as many would do in the past.

  • the freshman class at bb's is as good, or better, than ever at bb's.

there were a lot of cute petite spinner types along all other sizes , something for everybody.  the girls seemed to stay busy, but i dont think it was busy enough for their liking or anything like in bygone years.

the monger crowd is aging, the days of hitting 4 and 5 different girls in a day are gone for most of us  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(               and it showed with others there as well.   i would guess that 75% of those staying at bb's  were 65 and over.  wont be long and they will have to have a nurse on staff to care for us all. lol

the group i was with ( 7 of us) was all retirement age but two, one of them retired at 59 the other in his mid 40's i am guessing.

the internet , for the most part, was very good this year.  there were times when the power was out and we would go on the genie that the internet would be down for a while but it would always come back up before the outside power did.

while the internet did work decent, it was slow.  i guess i will put up with slow just to have it 90-95% of the time.

i had hot water the entire time in D4 but my wing next door in D5 had no hot water. i did not understand that.  the volume sucked and the pressure would ebb and flow but i had hot water.   i just wish they would soften the water some.  i used a full bar of soap i brought with me down to a sliver in 4 days.   that same bar of soap will last weeks back home .   the water being so stinking hard made it next to impossible to get any suds worked up , hence using so much soap.   the lack of suds and lack of volume kind of took away from the shower.

as always, the physical plant around the complex is well kept and things all seemed to work well.   the compound is kept in good repair and things are well painted up and looking good.

one waitress, lily is no longer there.  it was hush , hush as to why she was fired.  if anybody knew (monica) they were keeping it really quiet.  monica seemed to have a knowing look about her but said nothing.   it truly is amazing so many could keep a lid on that like that.  give it time, somebody will come back with the reason.  i could hazard a guess, probably be right, but still would be speculation on my part.

lily was a nice gal, fun.   i liked her and it will be hard to get a personality like her's to take her place.

  • as for the chicas, i brought in about half of mine as i knew the gfe factor would be there.  that is still something that bb's struggles with.

my favorite at blackbeards was veronica.  a very pretty young lady, nice body, believe it or not, some modesty around others, and spoke ok english.   she is a girl that has a plan and then figures on getting away from blackbeards when she accomplishes her plan.

roni is the same old roni we always knew, good english skills, a banging body on her and delivers a solid performance.  there were others that the guys were with and reported porn star experiences with but i will let them report on their experiences.

nico and rob still do a great job of holding the fort down and maintaining the status quo, the waitstaff (minus lily) delivered the same service as always and the hardest working people in the place, the maids that provide the room service kept the facility spotless as always.

i really appreciate the maid service, and always go out of my way at check in to drop some bucks on her and ask for a couple more towels.  then i leave a few bucks, some chocolate and candy as well ,everyday .  they do a bang up job and are able to service the room at times that they are never a bother.  they seem to get their timing down, figure out the daily schedule , if you would, so as to never interfere with my comings or goings.

after the super bowl party there was a bit of a mess around the facility. they had baloons everywhere and the girls that evening on their way out would break them all leaving a mess.  the maids never said a word, simply cleaned things up.   one afternoon, two of the maids were cleaning the stairway up to the crows nest. it had been quite a mess from the night before.  the two of them were cleaning the stariway with brushes, not a vacuum.   i think they got it cleaner than a vacuum would have . lol  it sure looked like a lot of work all stooped over, working one stair at a time.

  • i should mention, at the super bowl party most of us went up to the crows nest to watch it up there.  the chicas, many of them in body suits with pom poms were there to cheer us (they didnt care about the super bowl. lol) on.  they would sit very quietly until a commercial came on and then would get up and do a dance routine, different things.  it was midway through the first quarter i told mammasn cristal that we had dollar bills and the chicas needed to entice us to give them up.  she announces that and the chicas were a bit hesitant at first but it did not take long for them to realize if they got those puppies out, we put a dollar bill there or in their crotch.  it wasnt long, ALL the girls were attracted to those dollars like shark to chum.

they would stand in line with their titties hanging out to get a dollar.  lol   it was kind of crazy but a good time.  heck, i had to run to my room at halftime to get another bundle of singles.   it was a good fun and the chicas made some bucks and didnt have to flat back to get it. lol   they did however have to get those puppies out, get them licked, sucked on, etc...

70 some bucks later i was titty tapped out. lol   it was all good.  made the game go fast.

also, i won 4600 pesos on the football pool.  pennies from heaven. lol  those pesos did not stay in my hands for long.   took roni and another gal i have no idea her name back to my room after the game.

i am not much on nfl football but i will put the superbowl at blackbeards on the top of my list. lol  we had a lot of fun.  lol

  • i forgot to mention , on wednesday or thursday night we had miguel get a charcoal grill and we got some burgers, wings , chips, condiments, beer and soda and went down to the beach and had a barbeque after dark.

the wings were excellent.  miguel had his wife marinate them somehow or another and then we barbequed them down at the beach.  the burgers were excellent!!  juicy, flavorful, very very good.

it was a bit windy that night, probably not our best idea ever, but the food was good and everybody had a good time.

the intentions were to build a bonfire, however, i dont think we could have gotten it lit.  IT WAS FRIGGEN WINDY. LOL   we moved everything into one of the beach bar shacks that had a wind break set up .  it even blew the grill out . lol

  • we always have a good time.  there were 7 of us this time, i think, plus others that were there that would join in from time to time.

the morning breakfast's , as always , were a lot of fun, comparing notes from the night before, who took who, who was good , who was not, waiting for the sleepy heads to walk across, just general busting of one anothers balls.  a daily event.

funny thing, in years past there would always be at least 3 of us sitting in the lobby area drinking coffee before the restaurant opened. then, most of the rest of the crew would roll down between 8 -8:30am.  not so this year.  seems everybody took to sleeping in some.  i wonder if our age finally caught up with us?  lol

edit:  there were 8 of us there.  oldnewbie rolled in on tuesday , feb. 4th, after the rest of us had been there a while.  he was not able to get a room at the inn for the party and rather than sleep in a manger he chose to come a few days after the superbowl

  • one of the guys, jimjames, stayed an additional week after the crew left the DR and went to the SU to do some diving (muff diving? he is padi certified.  i better ask lol )  i was chatting with him this morning and he said that there were plenty of chicas around in the su.

he said at night there were plenty of girls milling around, they just wernt posting up in a bar or at a corner like they used to. constantly on the move.

he said while it is different, it is still the same.

he was having a late breakfast in baileys and said half the patrons there were working girls.

i am sure he will have more to say on this, he will be there until sunday

update:   jimjames just messaged me, said he came back around to baileys and he counted the chicas sitting in the restaurant, 15 of them at 3pm in the afternoon.  not eating, mostly posting up

  • blackbeards, redux:

i just chatted with john on the phone in response to my email i sent him.  below is what i sent:

    hey john,

i hope all is well with you.  i havent heard from you in quite a while.  makes me wonder if things took a turn for the worse.

the last of our group just bot back from the DR.  good time was had by all.

a few observations, the physical plant , from the outside, is looking very good, things are well painted and kept clean.

your hardest working people in the place, your ladies that clean the rooms and the common areas are at it every day working hard to keep your guests happy and the place looking tip top, clean enough to eat off the floors. that is something that has always impressed me, how clean the floors are with the amount of traffic and just over all how dirty things are in the DR.  a lot of wind = a lot of dust = dirty.

keeping things clean also enters into ones mind with this stupid chinese virus out there now.  the first step to avoidance is cleanliness.

the girls, what can i say?  husker was down in november and reported back at that time it was the best looking group of girls he had seen assembled at bb's.   well, he has to take that back.  the group we observed was even better.

lots of good looking girls, all shapes and sizes.  some quite a bit beefier than i care for but hey, some like 'em thick.

the menu, i tried some of the mexican dishes and liked them, also the chicken chunks with garlic honey dip was a favorite .

i avoid anything with dominican beef in it. i just dont care for the aftertaste.  that takes out a lot of the pasta with meat sauce , hamburgers, beef dishes.

i continue to tell robin he needs to bring in a top quality beef, that we would pay for it.  his answer was it was too expensive.

sooooooooo, we have our cab guy get a charcoal grill and we have a barbeque down at the beach.  we spent big bucks on it, enjoyed our food thoroughly, and spent probably 3 hours at the beach drinking beer and eating food not purchased at bb's.

i  mentioned to rob the next day about going down there, that we had a good time but there was no reason we could not have done that right there at bb's.  i asked what he thought he paid a pound for hamburger, figured you served 1/3 pound patties and compared it to what we purchased, angus burgers, the most expensive, from la serena.   you could serve the same product for a couple more bucks a burger.

told rob that buy the good beef, take pre orders, charge the order to the room in advance, then have a charcoal fire once a week .  i bet you would be surprised what that would do.   it would be a party atmosphere, guys would not leave to go eat dinner and the bucks would stay inside the gates along with the guys.

    just saying.

the hot water/volume is still an issue in the D block of rooms.   i had "just enough" hot water to not have a cold shower in D4. i had zip for volume and pressure, i only got that when i turned the cold wide open.  the hot was not hot enough to even have a warm shower with the cold on.

my wingman next door in D5, never had hot water the entire week.  that makes zero sense to me and when he told me that on checkout day when i was in his room helphing him pack out i went to try everything i knew to coax some hot water out of the shower.  nothing, nada, just cold water.  i am checking with one other to see what he had in D2.  chuck should get back to me today yet.

not having a good shower sure starts (and finishes) the day out on a sour note.   a shower is more than just scrubbing the stink off your balls and butt crack.  it is climbing into a warm shower, plenty of water while you do your thing with water always rinsing the soap off the body.

this has been an issue for years.   to date, the only thing that seems to have been resolved is a bit more hot water (not in D5).  when i mention it to rob, he said he checked and asked and nobody complains.   i am not sure if he is talking dominican shower or something more along the lines of what we are accustomed to.

you can have pressue without volume, which is all it would take (except for D5).  it would require maintenance and cleaning of the lines though to keep the water running, low volume, high pressure.

heck, put a storage tank on the roof.  let the sun preheat the water during the daylight hours, use that head of pressure to keep pressure on the system.  heck, that could get you 15#'s of pressure in the kitchen just using gravity.

to sum things up, the girls were hot, though, not so gfe.  that said, we probably brought 40-50% of our girls in in our group.  maybe more . i would have to think about that a bit.  we do that because we know we will get the gfe.  your girls need to understand that money could be spent on them.  also, we pay a premium for that just like we would pay for a good hamburger or steak

now, should you ever decide to bring in quality meat, your chef would have to learn how to handle and cook it.  no freezing of a steak cut of meat.  (if you cant tell, i am a steak snob, i buy only fresh cut, i temp it to room temp before cooking, etc...   ) hamburgers, they come frozen, they work.   the burgers we had down at the beach were delicious.  cant remember having one that juicy in  a long time.

the hot water is/has been an issue that never seems to get resolved.

the internet was not too bad. it was slow, we expect and accept that, just so long as it is there most of the time.

a lot of the stuff discussed will keep guys inside your gates spending money at bb's instead of out in the community.

oh, a lot of the stuff they put up on the dry erase board as entertainment, like dance night, there was something else, i was there, never saw it. lol   i mean, dominicans are always dancing, not sure when the dance thing was supposed to have been.

good time had by all, looking for better times

john said he was going to do a special menu with quality beef.  a person would have to pre order their meal and that way they would have the meat on hand, marinated  or ever how you wanted it ready for a more disc earning palate.   he said they could start doing it once a week as a special and see how that worked, the demand for it, etc...

when i told him i wont eat dominican beef in anything he understood. they go to great efforts to cover up the underlying flavor.

he also said for breakfast they were going to do a breakfast burritto, something similar to what mc d's does .  that would be good.

in the past it was brought up that he should put pizza on the menu.  he is looking for a frozen pizza that they can add the vegies per item and hopefully turn out a good product.  kind of a win , win.  he doesnt have room to make pizza or to have a pizza oven but could do a frozen thing, we get a pizza on the menu.

on the gfe issue, he asked if we ever went to kristal and told her what it was we wanted, that we pulled girls in to get what we wanted and that we paid extra for that.  he said that might resonate if they could see it happening (they often get mad if they are not doing good biz) and they were sitting on their butts while we found what we wanted, GFE.

he was upset about the hot water and pressure issue.  some , because nobody said anything while we were there and mostly because he has spent a lot of money trying to fix it and it keeps coming back and haunting.  he wants to resolve that.  we shall see.

what came of the email and his response:

wants to get imported beef on the menu, starting as a special.  they have a char broiler in the kitchen so this should be pretty close to charcoal.  we would still get the greases falling on the briquettes and get the flavors of the smoke from the grease burning

wants us to help drive home the GFE thing by telling mammasan and telling her what we are doing

wants to continue to expand the menu and is open to ideas so long as kitchen prep space allows

i am sure we talked about more, i wish i would have written things down. if i remember something, i will post it
