flights to the DR

  • this 737 max boeing jet being grounded seems to be messing up a lot of flights.

the typical flight for the past dozen years from dtw/mia/pop has been the same with arrivals and departures almost the same time the entire time.  the flights have been  a breeze for the past decade plus, the only thing changing was price.

now, when trying to book flights it seems way more difficult to find something with a good connection and not sit all day in an airport or have to overnight to go out the next day on the second leg.

are any of you finding flights difficult to find like i mentioned above?

btw, the airline we have always used is AA and they have the biggest percentage of the 737 max boeings

  • I normally fly West Jet from Toronto to Puerto Plata.  The usual cost is $615 CAD ($460 USD) return.  They fly the 737 MAX six days a week in the winter.  They are now flying older 737s 7 days a week, but that is fewer seats than the six days a week with the MAX.  I tried to book a flight recently and was quoted $730 CAD one way!.  So I said no thank you.

  • I would travel more to the DR if the airfare were more reasonable especially to POP. To be honest, getting to the DR and back is a pain in the ass. I don't live on the East Coast. I'm out here in Cali. There are no special deals, discounts or "wanna get away" rates for us out here.  About $800-850 to get from N. California to the DR is typical.

I'm sorry East Coasters but I have no sympathy for you. If I take American Airlines I have to do a red-eye to DFW to MIA then to POP with a layover at each stop. On the way back I have to take POP to MIA or Charlotte. Charlotte to home direct if I'm lucky or get stuck with flying to either PHX or LAX then to my home base.

JetBlue is nicer from my home base to JFK then to the DR. But they keep jacking up the schedule so much, it's tough to nail down a decent time frame. Don't get me started on the jet lag from west to east. That's an issue onto itself. Then the girls wonder why I'm so tired when I hit the spot. "I'm like, bitch I've been either in and airport or on a plane for 16 hours and crossed 3 time zones."

It's kinda funny. Dominican women only know 3 cities in America; Nueva York, Boston, and Miami. Any other town or city in the USA might as well be on the dark side of the moon.

  • I usually fly to STI non stop over night and get to Blackbeard’s by 3am.. it’s cheap at under 400.00.  In the morning I decided to pay a little more to fly to POP so I get most of Wednesday.. it cost about 590.00 from Boston.  I’m counting the minutes until I leave.

  • often knowing my travel dates far in advance, i start looking at least 6 months before travel.  i am most always able to cut a couple hundred off the typical rate that way by catching the low of the ebb and flow of pricing

  • I woke up one day at 5:30 am for work and as the night went in I was afraid of going to bed and waking up late so I just dozed off for an hour.  Turns out the time on my itinerary was the time the plane left and not the boarding so I showed up at boarding time so had to book a later flight and pay a fee.. now I can’t reach anyone to reschedule my pickup.

all you had to do was email blackbeards if that is who your pickup was through.  otherwise, just grab a cab out at the stand, but... negotiate your price beforehand.  90 bucks or cheaper and make sure they know where they are going.  if they are not sure, have them take you to the malecon and then call blackbeards and get directions

  • i got an email on airfare, there are some really good deals out there right now guys.  anything in the next month, insane deals, deals as far ahead as the first of next year, lowest fare to the DR i have seen in a good while.  good route, good times, $650

edit: just found the same flight, $582

edit the edit:  husker called me and told me that american airlines will allow you to change your ticket for free the the beer virus thing going on.  here is an excerpt from their change policy:

"If you purchased a ticket on American Airlines between March 1, 2020 at 4:30 p.m. CT and March 31, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. CT, you may change your flight once without paying a change fee. Tickets must be purchased for travel between March 1, 2020 and January 30, 2021."

That's because AA has just announced they're suspending practically all of their flights to South America at midnight tonight. This is probably not a good time to reserve anything as most people who already have plans are crashing their website looking for answers/alternatives.

  • i had kind of figured that jett, wasnt certain though. i have tried since this morning to get price on a flight and then a few times through the afternoon with the same results.  it just acted like when a website cant be found.

with AA liberal cancellation policy and the low fares i have found the past week, i was going to book a couple of cheap flights. if things dont work out when the time comes, simply cancel out and the bucks will be there for another flight when i book.

i was finding good flights to the DR for under $600.  that is about 2-250 under this past years trip and i expect it to go cheaper here over the next few weeks

  • West Jet, the only scheduled carrier from Canada to DR, (the other airlines are charters catering to one or two week All Inclusive packages) has announced it is shutting down all its international services as of Sunday 22 March.  You can hardly blame them.  They said a fully booked flight with more than 150 passengers from Vancouver to LA left with 12 passengers.  The rest were no shows
