Rental Car Suggestions ???

  • What's up fellas,  I will be making my 5th voyage to the Northern coast of the DR between the 31st of July to 8Th of August. The last time down there I set up a rental car pickup at the airport from budget using Expedia which puts a $88.00 charge on my credit card which is no problem and I expected that, But the problem was Budget at the airport did not honor the Expedia contract and I had to do a whole new negotiating with them and the other rental car carriers at the airport. Well I got a rental but not at the Expedia price... Now here's the question, should I use on-line websites like Expedia and Priceline, Deal on-line directly with the car rental companies or negotiate at the airport when I get there???   By the way Expedia did return my 88 dollars and budget claimed I didn't pickup the car, but in actuality budget didn't except Expedia's offer...

I have rented a car on my last 4 trips, and let me just say it is not cheap. Just like the Dr taxi mafia there is the rental car mafia that don't give a dam about their corporate office, their pricing or their insurance.

So here is what I have experience so far, I'm a big AVIS rental member, I rent frequently for work. So I get a rate on the car usually around $40/ day. I never not had AVIS at the POP airport not honor that price. But here is where the rental mafia kicks in, on the full insurance both for the car, or any passengers in your car or other car  passenger involved in an accident. You don't want to deal with the DR courts, and lawyers. If you get in an accident they will be suing you and this will take years to resolve. I have read one American guy, who was in accident, has been in the DR Courts 6 years and still not resolved.

Here is my advice use a US rental company. Pay the $54/ day for the full insurance, pay the $40 / a day rental. They will insist on opening up your charge card for $1200 for the week. Make sure you closely look at the car during the walk through, capture on the scratches dings, dents everything on the inspection document. Because they will go over the car when you return it.

Its a real pain in the ass renting a car in the DR, however I like the flexibility of having wheels at my disposal.  Renting a car in the DR is a real risk, as you know the DR drivers what I call " visual driving rules" that don't obey any traffic rules, red lights, stop signs, one ways, speed limits. If they can see where they are going they will drive to it the fastest way possible.

If I didn't rent a place 10 minutes from downtown, I would not go through the hassle of renting a car, I would get a driver line up.

  • I do plan on using an American rental car agency and buying the insurance, but how should I book it, on-line direct with the company or at the airport negotiating prices with the different companies?

I book it direct with AVIS using my wizard card. I believe all US companies will let you book direct.

  • Somewhere on here I posted a long story about rentals cars and it's true that it's nice to pick up and go but be prepared a cop sees a gringo they will pull u over and look for a bribe and that shit happened to me and I have rented a car on 4 occasions and will not no more.  Plus it's much cheaper to use a cab guy like Miguel or Carlos

I also used avid and booked online with a coupon and they honored it

  • when it come to renting a car in DR, book it directly with the car rental company (ie avis budget national) and then pay when you get down there, i know budget allows you to book your car rental and when yo pick up the car at the airport you pay right there.

  • I rented a car for 2 weeks during my last trip, after being refered to the rental guy by another Monger that I met at FOD.  The guy was great, and will meet you at the airport coming and going.  He charged me $30. a day.  His company is out of Sosua.
It may depend on how much driving you're doing, etc.  I think he told me that there would only be an issue if the car was totaled.  He obviously gains business by word of mouth from us.  You may be able to get a cheap initial rate by using sites like Kayak, etc., but when they add in the insurance, it gets expensive.  If you're on the north coast, driving is easy, going along the main road.
It's convenient, to go to the bank, or the club, etc.  Also needed if you hit any cabanas.  I put a post on this site with his contact info.  If you're interested, and can't find my post, let me know.

  • I've rented two ways. I've done the airport and I've done the in town rental.  The airport is really expensive with all the add on's and they try to scare you into getting everything. Window ins, tire ins, collision etc.. I've also rented in town with a guy. You pay your daily rental fee and that's it. Only draw back is you pay what you damage. We were only driving in Sosua, no where else, so it worked out.  If your driving more than just the strip I would recommend the rental company's IMO.
