Some people don't get it!

  • So as the story goes, some dude carrying a cross on foot (from Santo Domingo maybe) was supposed to get to the beach on the malecon of Puerto Plata where he would pray and bring an end to the virus.

All social distancing went by the wayside.  One video I saw shows the police escorting him.  :motion:

As a result the Puerto Plata area went on lockdown and no one could leave or come in except for food and such.

  • I'm speechless. That's a long walk from SD to PP.  What if he doesn't make it all the way to the malecon in PP? Does that mean 6 more weeks of virus?  :motion:

  • Saw this on DR1 as a follow up :

A week after the religious pilgrimage through city streets in Puerto Plata, the authorities report that at least 58 persons are infected with the Covid-19 epidemic. The pilgrimage broke all social distancing rules, but was allowed by the military and police authorities and the city government. An estimated 5,000 persons from Puerto Plata congregated on the Malecon to follow cross-bearing pilgrim Migdomio Adames as he walked to a beach to plant a large wooden cross and pray to God for deliverance from the Covid-19 epidemic.

After the surprise event, the government ordered an epidemiological cordoning off of the city and efforts to locate persons who had participated in the event. A new regional police director, Colonel Francisco Pérez Encarnación, was given strict instructions to enforce social distancing protocols in the province.

  • And with 58 more infections in one day that probably means 4 or 5 additional deaths two or three weeks from now.

I know I am biased (we all are) but it is another example of the intermingling of the government (PLD Party) the Catholic Church and the Military/Police in DR.  Throw in the rich aristocracy and you have the main reason why DR is held back.  It has so much potential, but the above mentioned groups are skimming off almost all the increase in GNP leaving the ordinary people with nothing.

  • Big boy it's everywhere. Called greed. Just some places worse than others. Some people are never satisfied with what they have and always reaching for more power or money at the expense of others.  These are depressing times, so don't think about it too much.  Just concentrate on your next visit to DR where you can make life a little brighter for those we visit.
