Sosua 101

  • Ok, So I'm really leaning on spending my entire May trip 5-8 days at Sosua.  I've tried to search all over this forum for tips and warnings.  The results of those searches are to say the least exhaustive.  They are pretty spread out and covers alot of timelines some of which may no longer be relevant. So I have started this thread in hopes of getting the seasoned vets on here to put there input or advise on here.  Warnings and how to stay safe overthere would be greatly appreciated.  In reading the TR on Sosua the one thing I gather from it all it is a completely different animal than the resorts like BB and FOD.

  • Sosua is pirate town. Wenches, grog, and pirates.

Be in control in public at all times. The only time I've had all my shit stolen was when I let it out of sight and control.

Take only as much money as you need. All the usual travel in a foreign country advice. I have heard of pick pocketing chicas.

To get around beyond Sosua, use the public taxis. Get on a moto concho, say taxi publico, tell the guy at the taxi stand where youre going, and get all the way to Puerto Plata for 50 pesos.

Double beers are 100 pesos at D'Latin.

Drink on the strip. Get drunk back at the hotel.

Never get involved in a land war in Asia.

Sosua street meat sucks. Go to Passions for pussy, D'Latin for attention, drinking and dancing.

Take your cash and get it all changed at one time, or use the Progreso ATM in Sosua. I heard about all the problems with it, but I didn't have any.

The best cheapest food is the grilled chicken place about a block or two from the strip on Pedro Clisante, away from the beach. 150 pesos for half a marinated chicken, and it's awesome.

Don't wear your fucking scrip glasses into the surf like my dipshit friend.

    Everybody is your friend. Not.

Carry a 500 peso get out jail free card with you for Officer Friendly.

    Don't mention my name.

Have the fucking time of your life.

  • Always negotiate all details before taking a chica back. Chica proof your room. Rockys has fantastic ribs. Contact Rick at Rockys for a place to stay. He has several options and tell him you are a member. He will take good care of you and any problems you might have in Sosua.

  • I second Huskers comments,

Had an opportunity to enjoy Ricks ribs followed by a one on one exchange of info. REALLY friendly and receptive! Provided lots of info concerning the local scene. Reccommend both his accommodations,bar/restaurant without hesitation!

    A true friend of IFTC!!

  • Stay on the strip, looking for pussy,  or no further than Passions.

Stay out of the neighborhoods where the locals live, especially if you don't speak Spanish.

Keep your wallet in your front pocket, chicas grabbing your dick may be picking your pocket.

Leave Your expensive jewelery at home.

Don't wear a white tux to classicos like C-MO cakes. :o

  • All good advice. Keep it under the radar (no fancy jewerly, flashing cash etc..) and you should be fine. I can't add anything that's already been said.

I rolled the dice once by going to a chicas house in the barrios late at night. Not recommended. It turned out ok with the exception of her trying to get more $$ in the morning and acting like a total bitch.

  • I took my very first trip to DR solo and to sosua, and even tho I have spent time in FOD and BB I would never stay there.  Go with no fear and use common sense and you'll never look back.  Yes, Sosua is a different animal, you'll see the good, you'll see the bad and the ugly and I wouldn't have it any other way. ;D

    1. Pick a good place to stay, Rick of rockys can set you up and even introduce you to other mongers you can trust.
    2. Don't trust the locals who want to guide you, translate for you and find you chicas.
    3. Most chicas are available, don't be shy and walk up to them.  Some will disappoint you others will give you the time of your life.
    4. Keep a copy of your passport with you, leave everything else in the room safe.
    5. Don't carry more money than you need, I usually carry around no more than 5000 pesos, you can always go back to your room   for more.
    6. Passions is point and click like BB, if you're unconfortable around town on your own, pay to take a chica from passions and have her with you while you learn and feel your way around town.  Passions chicas answer to the owner and won't do anything wrong.
    7. Just because a chica is aggressive and you feel she really wants you, doesn't mean she'll be a winner.
    8. Walk around with confidence and don't be afraid to say no as people try to sell you shit.
    9. You may have a chica you negotiate a TLN want to leave early, try to negotiate her leaving with less pesos, but don't let it get out of hand, sometimes it's better to cut her loose.  Personally I don't want to pressure her to stay if she really doesn't want to.
    10. Unlike BB the chicas here answer mostly to themselves.  Some may reject you, it's rare but it happens.  After many trips I only had one chica not go with me.  Yes I was once rejected by a puta. ;D  She may have been holdint out for a big payday, IDK.
    11. Check for cedula (ID) if a chica doesn't have one, don't take her.
    12. Have fun and don't fall in love.  That should have been the first one. :)

to expand on this a bit, u will find locals that speak good english want to show u around, find u a chica, offer to find u more, take u down to (pick the name of the bar u were looking for) .  just say NO!!  a domincan that speaks that good of enlish is nothing but a problem.  he will leach off of u, want money and u wont be able to get rid of him.  just say NO!!   be wary of the gals that speak too good of english, often they are hardcore. be very very wary of the guys that speak good english, they are often con men
    3. Most chicas are available, don't be shy and walk up to them.  Some will disappoint you others will give you the time of your life.

when they continue to badger u, be it a vendor, the guy trying to guide u, whatever, just turn your head away , shake your head no while wagging your index finger no at him.  they will back off
    9. You may have a chica you negotiate a TLN want to leave early, try to negotiate her leaving with less pesos, but don't let it get out of hand, sometimes it's better to cut her loose.  Personally I don't want to pressure her to stay if she really doesn't want to.

ask to see it BEFORE u leave the bar.  all to often the chica will say she has one only to get to your hotel and guess what mr. blueballs?  she doesnt have one, but... she has a dive she will take u too.  always maintain control of your surroundings, ie. bang em in your room, not theirs
    12. Have fun and don't fall in love.  That should have been the first one. :)
