  • At many of the local banks, you could open up a savings account with a reference letter from your home bank (in US or Europe or wherever).  And yes, you could get an ATM card.

But, be sure that you really want to.  Keep in mind that you can bring under $10,000 in cash with you on any trip to the DR.

And even with a local bank account and ATM card, you still need to be careful where you use the card because there are still too many places that copy numbers and use them for fraudulent charges, so be careful who you deal with.  I still recommend using cash when possible as opposed to an ATM card, less risk.

If you are worried about getting robbed, split your money up and put some in different pockets, and you could get a money belt for the larger amount.  In a worse case scenario and someone robs you, they usually want what they can get and then run away, so give them the small amount form one pocket and let them run away.

Do not wear your phone on your belt where everyone can see your fancy phone.  Keep it in your pocket if you need to carry it.
And you do not need to wear fancy watches or jewelry while here.  They already assume you are rich because you are able to afford to travel and visit the DR.

But that is worse case, for the most part, the DR is actually quite safe and the people are very helpful.

Another thing to consider is that the peso is going up versus the dollar.  And, after the election, it is expected to go up more.  Having money in a peso savings account is only going to lose value.

Yes - you could open a USD savings account, BUT if you do that, then take the money out as USD and go exchange it at a cambio, because the bank exchange rate will most likely not be as good as the cambio.
But that means travelling to the bank and then travelling to the cambio.  If you are just visiting, you have to ask yourself if it is worth all that time, when you could have brought cash and at least saved yourself one trip.

So, just my oponion, but I would not recommend opening a local bank account unless you were going to be living here for at least a few months each year.

  • Indeed every trip i take i bring about 1500 in cash and i also have 1 atm card and one prepaid card i get from walmart. I never store them in the same place 1 stays in the safe and the other gets hid very well. Also something i learned from being military and traveling I leave back up emergency cash with someone in the states that i have 24/7 communications with just incase and also i make copies of my passport. I actually had my first passport destroyed in Iraq and do to me having copies it sped up the process of me getting a new one.

  • Bank of America has a relation with Scotia bank.  You will not be charged with big fee if you use a Scotia ATM

  • FUCK NO !!!!!!!!   My brother did it years ago and one day ......... poof it was gone.  He would join me on my mongering trips and thought the same thing.  He had won a good amount of money (about $4,000) at the hotel casino and decided to open a savings account.  I can't remember the bank name but it was a National bank.  About 2 years later when he finally ditched his girlfriend he came back with me.  We went to the bank and it was gone.  Just fucking vanished, only tarmac left.  Shit changes so much in the DR there's no way you can trust anyone in that regard.  It's about as dumb as handing it over to a chica and asking her to save it for you.
