The US diplomatic authorities have announced that according to the local press and police statistics, figures for armed robberies, committed at junctions on main roads in Santo Domingo, are on the rise. The US diplomatic representation has reported that in general, the modus operandi consists of 2 motorcycle-riding armed men attacking the passengers of vehicles waiting at in traffic-jams at junctions in order to rob them. Utmost caution should be taken at junctions on the following roads: Avenida John F. Kennedy with Avenida Abraham Lincoln, Avenida Maximo Gomez and Avenida Ortega y Gasset; Avenida Ortega y Gasset with Avenida San Martín and Avenida Paraguay (to Plaza de la Salud); Avenida 27 de Febrero and Avenida Churchill. Similar incidents have also been reported at Avenida Luperon (west).

I was considering going to Santo Domingo in 2007 and at the time they were saying that activity like this was going on.
